The Escargot - RV/Camper Car Transporter Conversion - Part 1

  • Published: 12 April 2019
  • In part one of our side project, we take a 34 year old ex-library bus and begin its transformation into what we hope will be a hotel on wheels with the added bonus of being able to transport any of our vehicles at the same time. The venerable truck needs to go on a diet, so out come the power tools...

The best way I've found to remove hydraulic lines I don't care about is to cut them flush with the fitting, and use a deep well socket with some kind of electric or pnuematic impact gun. Had to do it with power steering lines and old lines on a couple tractors. Smells horrible cutting through hydraulic fluid, but it's worth it.

Isnt it illegal to remove the rear "bumper"? Isnt that like a safetything, if a low car rear ends you it doesnt go under and gets crushed?
I think you should mount it back or put something equal to it, just for safety

Ratchet open end adjustable is a thing , I have Stanley made ones and they are great on larger size bolts after being loosed . Although I'm not sure it would have fitted in that gap but still a useful tool for boredom reduction

I really, REALLY hope you guys replace that bumper with something equally substantial. There's a VERY good reason it was so huge and heavy. It's a critical safety component in rear-end collisions. Removing the bumper or replacing it with one that is not strong enough is akin to duct taping a sharp kitchen knife to the steering wheel, pointed directly at your neck.

Yes, it's a heavy turd, but I'm a paramedic, and I've seen what happens when inadequate rear bumpers on trucks get rear-ended by cars. PEOPLE DIE, and die in a HURRY.

You want the bumper on that truck to be as solid as possible, because if it fails, it folds up under the truck and the hood of the car slides under as well, leaving the tiny A pillars to fail and the rear step of your truck becomes a goddamn guillotine. Those bumpers should never crumple, they need to be as solid as possible, because when they fail, if the car was doing more than about 45, the driver and passenger are dead.

Here's a video of what you're doing with that truck by removing the bumper, and examples of how much a good bumper can do to save lives. The key here is that the bumper be as solid as possible.

I've seen more than enough corpses from exactly this kind of injury (north or 45mph you tend to never see anyone survive, and if they do, they wish they were dead.) Don't cheap out on that bumper. It might save someone's life.
