Wall-E is one of my all time favorite movies, cheering me up even when I'm in the worst of moods. But the other night when watching it, between the many moments of manly weeping, I came to a horrible realization - Cupcake-in-a-Cup is People! IT'S PEOPLE! I mean where else would their food be coming from? Now you're saying MatPat that seems a little dark, maybe even far fetched; and, I wish you were right. But unfortunately, I'm here to prove it to you.

I mean japan has discovered how to synthesize protein burgers out of human feces from the sewers so cannibalism doesn’t really shock me.

why deos they not just plant something? if you want to go safe you would take dyrt on board to can reproduce food because for these chakes, they need water and because they dont run out of water for 700 years it means that they must have enough to water some plants and sunlight is too there.... so why? the first captains knows how do to that

But if all they eat is people, even if they're on an average diet (say 2,000 calories a day) one person would only feed about 50 people for a day, assuming that each person is 100,000 calories. That means that 1/50 of their population (thousands of people) is eaten PER DAY. And in order for them them to become obese, it's likely even more than that. Their population would decrease rapidly.

This is a fantastic theory, and I would take it for fact... if it were indeed supposed to have been a 5-year cruise. However, I believe this was never the case. The movie presents us with the commercials for the starliners, and the captain mentions it was supposed to be a 5-year cruise, but all evidence in the movie points to this only being a cover the government used to evacuate its citizens without creating mass panic. Why would a 5-year cruise come equipped with life-seeking drones? Why would a 5-year cruise have a program that immediately transported its inhabitants to Earth when a plant was inserted into a specially-made apparatus?
With this in mind, I’m sure there would have been some sort of food-making process not accessible to the general public for fear of raising too many questions. Also, meat and veggies are good for a while in a freezer, but wouldn’t be fresh after five years (unless they were serving those weird “imperishable” rations they provide in those apocalyptic kits- oh. Hmmm. Put a pin in that), so it’s safe to assume they had to get fresh food from somewhere for the initial cruisers who were tricked into thinking it was only a 5-year cruise and would have expected higher-value food.

Now, could this still point to cannibalism? Of course! But I doubt that the government’s first long-term thought was “eh, blend up the dead bodies and put em in a cup idk”, especially with all the adverse health affects cannibalism results in besides weight gain.

My theory is that they have some sort of hidden food processing systems, with either hydroponics or otherwise. Maybe they’re serving insects, which don’t need a whole lot of room to grow and provide incredible amounts of protein, which would also definitely be more appetizing in succ form without the knowledge of its consumers.

Recently protein was able to be created through using water, nutrients and vitamins, and carbon dioxide capture. I wonder since water can be attained from space and carbon dioxide can be produced from breathing if they were able to create foods by using solein or other ways that convert other particles into food like flint lockwoods FLDSMFUR. Wall-e was placed farther in the future than 2050 so It is possible that the invention of rearraging molecules and atoms to convert air into food could have been discovered.

I just can't accept cannibalism in my favorite movie.
Wonder if wall-e can be live action rebooted

This is why I love this channel, I thought of this too. It does work, especially since they are raised on the ship, they wouldn’t have anything to compare the taste to so they wouldn’t know it was people. it is whatever they are told it is as children. who knows what they call “cupcake in a cup” would taste like to one of us. I noticed it first time I saw the movie and figured it was a little nod to Logan’s Run or any number of old sci fi stories.. soilent green is people.. to serve man.. etc. one of those things that adults would get but would go right over the kids heads.

There's probably a bigger issue about this movie than the fact that people are eating people. To be honest if people eating people is only a problem because the food is too high in calories then it is really not a problem at all. I mean think about the prions that those future humans could be ingesting but we don't see that happening since they aren't dying early from spongiform encephalopathy and in fact could be living twice as long as our oldest modern humans. Yes there might be an ick factor but it's the same ick factor people have about eating certain kinds of seafood or insects or dogs. The same ick factor of people who have never seen where their hamburgers come from going to a slaughterhouse and then turning vegan from the trauma.

The real problem here is that none of the people have even seen a plant before. So maybe there's finally a plant that can potentially survive on planet Earth but none of these mutton heads even know what agriculture is. And that's even if their horribly disfigured bodies can even muster up the energy to farm which is a very physically intense job. They are all dead. The evil Hal9000 steering wheel was right. And this is why you don't allow the robots that can't even speak outside of some beeps and single digitized utterances of words take the lead. On board the starliner the humans had renewable sources of food and a ship that could be self sustained for millions of years. On Earth these returning future humans are doomed to die slow horrible deaths of starvation poisoned by the very planet they hoped to return.

But hey that's not a theory....

that's pretty much a given based on what we see.
