I think it is less optimism that allows wealth inequality... more that all our politicians are owned by the rich... just a thought.

            Tudor or Trader?
They talk about "The top 1%" like it's not 1 in 100 people who are substantially wealthy. That means in a city of a million, one hundred thousand are significantly wealthy. The real problem is that in those numbers, a large portion are uneducated. The college students from the dwindling middle-class are mostly in debt from the exorbitant cost of a university degree, but the 1% on top could really care less. There are less and less jobs that require education because no one can run them or create them. Most spend their money on bullying their classmates because they don't understand the numbers of others who are rich. Some can't even run an apartment. There are very few educated from the universities anyway because students just don't study. The libraries are old and cheap. What kind of solution do they expect? Hey, the truth is expensive and full of math and science. I've been sitting here researching for 14 years on a government ticket. Good luck, as Xenophon would say, good luck. What would you estimate the actually educated versus the credentialed educated is? Look. Education is extremely dangerous. People throughout history have been assassinated for merely owning books like "The Picatrix" or attempting alchemy, or standing against religion.

.... So are actually impoverished people really willing to screw over other impoverished people if they happen to win the lottery? Or is this just financially well off newscasters?

"Rich people don't owe you anything! Stop expecting them to pay because you're lazy!"
You're right, it would be unfair for someone to live off someone elses dime without doing work.
So why are there so many laws and regulations favoring the extremely wealthy on _my_ dime?

Or to put it in a way that the republicans can understand: We're not asking the rich to pay for our way of life, because they're already doing that to us. Or does sitting around in a five star hotel while you lay off thousands of employees to make a christmas bonus, or using a legal team to fuck with patent laws, or inflating the price of life saving medication sound like a good, honest, hard days work to you?

If you can honestly defend the practices of the american wealthy, then you've fallen right into their trap.

I thought you were going to make a point about the rich kids who get to live off their parents' dime with no work cause the estate tax is too low. Probably would have been a stronger point.

Income inequality is irrelevant. Poor people aren't. We need to get people out of poverty not getting wealthy people out of wealth.

I was hoping John would have a breakdown of the wealth gaps immediate and long term effects on individuals and groups rather than just use statistics to describe the wealth gap and the mentality behind buying a lottery ticket. He quickly mentions it hurts everyone but just doesn't go into depth on exactly its impact or offer solutions on how to fix it. One of the more depressing episodes

Well, Megyn Kelly is not wrong. She doesn't have a $5 million estate.
It's only a modest estimated $30 million net worth. And a minuscule average yearly salary of $8 million a year during her tenure at Fox and later the today show.
Don't you love it when millionaires go "oh please, it's not THAT much. Just let me leave behind a little something."

Inflation and taxes took money out of the average american's bank account and wage than could have ever taken from the assets of the rich protected behind corporations the stock market and foreign investment.

                                                            Hey dumbass

Only 1 out of every 700 deaths results in paying the federal estate tax today. The vast majority of estates — 99.9% — do not pay federal estate taxes.

While the top estate tax rate is 40%, the average tax rate paid is just 17%.

The estate tax is only paid on assets greater than $5.3 million per individual ($10.6 million per couple). Even billionaires pay nothing on the first $5.3 million left to their heirs.

Only 20 small business and family farm estates nationwide will owe any estate tax in 2013.

The estate tax will raise $225 billion over the next 10 years. This is more than the $164 billion 10-year shortfall in the highway and mass transit trust funds.

The Walton family — which owns half of Walmart — has exploited a loophole in the estate tax to avoid paying $3 billion in estate taxes. This could increase by tens of billions in the future.

Casino magnate Sheldon Adelson has exploited a loophole that allowed him to pass $8 billion to family members and avoid $2.8 billion in estate taxes.

Eliminated segregation..and promoted civil rights..for those who had never been allowed to have them..as president..he would have prevented the Vietnam war.. if he hadn’t been brazenly assassinated in front of the entire country..by this one lone guy, who was conveniently, gunned down before he ever set foot in a courtroom..gee, I wonder if THAT has anything to do with why, we’ve not had an entirely Democratic , Democrat in office..ever since..that, and the relentless pursuit of power , money, and status.. that rules over literally everything..due to capitalism..poisoning the country , with its primary and most devastating lie..that everyone..prospers or can prosper..rather than just those evil enough to do it by any means necessary..even if it kills people, in droves, destroys the lives of others, unjustly enriches depraved sociopaths..while financially crippling innocent people , and literally destroys the very planet we live on..I enjoy John Oliver’s show..but blithely casting aside the very idea of having a society where unjust and deliberately imposed levels of egregious income inequality..is very distasteful, and distinctly not funny..because it doesn’t have to be that way..and wouldn’t be..if we only had another democrat, who actually behaved as much like one, as J.F.K...who , as a individual I’m sure, had his flaws , faults, and shortcomings as all people do..but as a president? ..saved this country..from nuclear war and reverted there remaining in place ..permanent segregation , for black Americans..which by now , would have deteriorated far more, if segregation had never ended..there would literally be no such thing as a black person of wealth, status or political power..including Obama..and all those who have achieved such..yet look down upon their fellow men..women, and children , just as callously as the white fascists do..we are now a country where you are nothing , unless you either own a business..or have wealth..from some other source..but that’s all that matters anymore..and human beings aren’t thought of humanely , anymore...in some instances..they’re not even thought of as human, beings..and even when they are..it’s still only, as something who’s worth is based upon their status of wealth..and nothing more..and I don’t believe it has to be that way..if only those who have the position and power to change things would be willing to do so..

Without Globalization the group is confined to a country. With Globalization the group is expanded to the world. Globalization is able to produce richer rich who succeed by organizing to provide to the world better than almost all others from the world over. Passage of time will produce winners who successfully tear down the gains some won from the introduction of Globalization. The top 25 richest are almost all newbies that didn't have their fortunes handed to them.

At the beginning the profitability of following this path was much greater than it is now. Still there is the opportunity to earn very good return by investing in 2nd & 3rd world countries that are stable enough to guarantee safety of those investments. Some individuals were richly rewarded here. More than 350 milliion Chinese and many in the other recipient countries were raised out of significant poverty by these investments and the jobs they provided.
