@linus Tech Tips. I went to the website for the Red key. Would be nice to wipe my ssd and hdd to have peace of mind. The site says ."Crowdfunding is not shopping. Your donation is a way to support a project but does not guarantee that you will receive a perk." https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/redkey-usb-computer-data-wipe-tool--2/payments/new#/checkout . I was going to buy this but seeing that. I do not feel like wasting money. Do you recommend anything else other than RedKey?

I havent had a desktop pc in a long time but i still have the harddrive with me somewhere in my house. The rest of the pc is gone. I only even own a single desktop pc. Since then i have been using laptop since i need it for school as well. And even now all my laptops i ever used is still in my house. So i guess in terms of my data getting mined by other ppl it will probably not happen in awhile.

All it should ever take is one pass of writing all 1s or zeros. Physical damage does not destroy your data, it can still be recovered(at least maybe some.). If you separate the magnetic layer from the aluminum platter, the data is gone. It called delamination, the only physical method of ensuring the data is gone forever on a HDD.

It depends on the storage medium technology. There are several good (and no malware) FREEware and shareware programs, depending on the provider (like majorgeeks) that erase/modify data to US government standards for secure data deletion. With some newer drives the data storage cells are reduced so much and are so sensitive to interference that even a single "long" format can be effective in producing a non-recoverable wipe of the disk. However, some of the freeware programs can do things like over-write data clusters randomly with random data dozens of times (when a few times will actually be sufficient). These so change the flux of the cells that there is no recovery of the original data.
For SSDs however, you have to watch out for the section of the disk that is used for "over-provisioning". There are areas of the SSD the customer does not have access to without very specialized software and/or firmware modifying tools. The "over-provision" areas are used as cache by the SSDs so could theoretically keep some recoverable data because the firmware controls all the cache usage. With extensive read/writes, an end-user MIGHT be able to over-write all of the cache but there would be no way to verify it to be sure because the SSD firmware is designed to avoid exercising cells to prolong the life of the drive.

SSDs are problematic in this regard. Due to manufacturer-controlled "over-provisioning" there are storage cells that qparted (or any end-user-level software) simply cannot guarantee over-writing/formatting/etc. With the right tools, forensic recovery of SOME of the user's data is possible from the over-provision/cache cells. This can be a decent percentage of the size of the SSD.
A very, very good explanation of SSD "over-provision" is at:
                                                                    https://www.seagate.com/tech-insights/ssd-over-provisioning-benefits-master-ti/
The manufacturer usually sets up "over-provision" capacity as the difference between the GB spec and the GiB. However the manufacturer can choose to provide more, and even the user can leave an user-defined portion of the drive to be AUTOMATICALLY setup as the over-provision capacity...just reduce the size of partitions accordingly. Want about 10% more over-provision capacity? Just shrink the size of your partition by 10% (assuming a single partition on the drive).
