Just to keep things in perspective, 90% of all plastic in the ocean comes from 10 rivers, 8 in Asia and 2 in Africa, so our effort to control the waste in the oceans by limiting the use of plastic in the US is bound to have a near nil effect. But who can deny the feel good effect!

A Presumptuous Opinion:  Plastic will never stop because it is a derivative of crude oil. What do you think your clothes are made of? Polyester is plastic. And crude oil is here to stay. Don't buy an electric car, its all about controlling where and how far you are allowed to go according to the slave masters. Let's see electric passenger airplanes first. The governments will say they have added something to gasoline to make it burn clean in the near future. By the way only clear plastic can be recycled. Plastics with color cannot be broken down and reused for clothing made in China. China buys clear used plastic from other countries.

We would need to use our reusable bags 7,100 times before they would be less detrimental to the environment? First off, a few reusable bags shared in a household of people, which they all use for all of their lives, will easily be used that many times. That also means a lifetime of disposable plastic bags that are not thrown away multiple times a week. I know you were playing devils advocate with yourself with that comment, but that just shows how seriously weak of an argument there is to be made for continuing to use disposable bags, because that’s basically only a successful rationalization to not stop using disposable bags for people who aren’t the problem to begin with. Anyone who has a lifetime ahead of them, with a routine of using bags in their daily or weekly activities, or anyone who actually cares about not putting more plastic garbage out there for the sake of the other billions of people who are alive now or will be in the future, still have no excuse. It’s only if people won’t actually use that one reusable bag for as long as it holds up, in place of every disposable bag they would otherwise need, that it makes more sense to keep using plastic they have to toss out, and then that’s on them because they could use it even if the fact is that they won’t. It’s sad but the real truth is that our economy became dependent on certain things being sustainable before those things were actually determined to be sustainable, and now we’re all so snug in our comfort zones that we can’t step out of them long enough to fix what’s broken about them.

The bullsh*t about plastic having a lower footprint: #1-- if it makes possible the overconsumption we see all around us, is that really a benefit? #2-- yes, a cotton bag takes for to produce, but it does not end up in a whale's belly!
Pledging to Clean Seas might be a good move, but so is using a durable bag, coffee cup and spork. All of us, also can eschew products & packaging that promote the plastic/disposable culture. What happens in the 1st world filters down to the 3rd world eventually.

There is really no such thing as " pollution" . Everything man makes come from the earth, everything.
Even oil is just old forest compacted together until it become coal or oil.
The entire environmental movement was started by corporations as a way to stop law suits on them and shift the blame back on the consumer there by protecting the corporations.
